Heating and Cooling Systems
The thermostat, is command center of the HVAC system. The thermostat sends a signal to either heat or cool the space.
The furnace warms the air and directs it through the building's ductwork, typically using natural gas, oil, or electricity. Inside the furnace, a heat exchanger works by adding heat to the incoming air from the combustion chamber.
For cooling, an outdoor air conditioning (AC) unit expels the heat absorbed from inside the house. The compressor, changes the refrigerant from a gas to a liquid, releasing the absorbed heat in the process.
Properly sized ducts are also crucial for maintaining efficient airflow. Ducts that are too small can restrict airflow, while those that are too large can waste energy. The design of the duct system should ensure that air is evenly distributed throughout the space, addressing both comfort and energy efficiency.
Ventilation
Ventilation in an HVAC system is essential for maintaining indoor air quality, comfort, and energy efficiency. It ensures a continuous intake of fresh air, helping to dilute indoor pollutants and regulate humidity and carbon dioxide levels.
Effective exhaust ventilation removes stale air, moisture, and contaminants, especially in areas like kitchens, bathrooms, and utility spaces. A well-balanced ventilation system brings in the right amount of fresh air while exhausting stale air, preventing energy waste and maintaining air quality.
Heat Recovery Ventilators (HRVs) and Energy Recovery Ventilators (ERVs) enhance energy efficiency by transferring heat or both heat and moisture from outgoing air to incoming air. Filtration systems clean the fresh air before it enters the space, improving air quality and easing the workload on the HVAC system.
Well-designed ductwork ensures even distribution of air, while properly sized return ducts maintain airflow balance. Mechanical ventilation uses fans or blowers to circulate air, while natural ventilation relies on vents and windows, and a combination of both methods is often most effective.
Advanced control systems can regulate ventilation based on factors like occupancy and air quality, further enhancing comfort and efficiency. Proper ventilation also helps maintain healthy indoor air quality by removing pollutants, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and excess moisture, reducing the risk of respiratory issues.
Finally, ventilation systems help balance indoor humidity levels, preventing mold growth and avoiding discomfort from too little moisture.
